Summer of Sculpture
19 June - 22 August 2010

The Pier Arts Centre celebrates sculpture this season through a pairing of exhibitions showcasing the work of local, national and international sculptors. The Summer of Sculpture at the Pier Arts Centre is sponsored by Orkney Aggregates Ltd.

STONE project and Milestone Carve is a display of sculptures, photographs, films and objects detailing a three year research programme undertaken by Edinburgh College of Art. The guiding principal of the project is to document how stone is worked and understood throughout the world, with the aim of preserving the ancient human skills involved with stone carving.

The exhibition includes a fraction of the research material from the project as well as displaying large sculptural works by ten international artists created during a live carving event at Edinburgh College of Art in 2009.

The artists included in the exhibition are Joel Fisher (USA), Jake Harvey (Scotland), Jessica Harrison (Scotland), Takeshi Hayashi (Japan), Carlos Lizariturry (Spain), Gerard Mas (Spain), Atsuo Okamoto (Japan), Sibylle Pasche (Switzerland), Peter Randall-Page (England) and Susanne Specht (Germany).

Carved, Modelled & Cast
, an exhibition of sculptural works by two Orkney artists, will also be on display throughout the summer.

Frances Pelly was born in Edinburgh and brought up in Perth but has since made Orkney her home. For this exhibition she has produced a series of small figurative and abstract sculptures and relief panels using clay, plaster, wood and paper, based on the observation of nature.

John Cumming was born and brought up in Shetland. After moving to Orkney, he was principal teacher of art at Stromness Academy for many years. His heritage within the fishing community in Burra is the inspiration for his work which includes sculptures and constructions made using traditional materials such as wood, iron, stone, hemp and leather.
