Hannah Rickards: Thunder
2 - 30 October 2010
Live Performance of score:
1 October at 7.00pm in Stromness Town Hall

Commissioned by Media Art Bath in 2005, Rickards’ sound work, Thunder, will be installed in the galleries at the Pier Art Centre throughout October.

Thunder, a recording of an eight-second thunderclap was stretched into a seven-minute passage, transcribed and arranged into a score for a sextet by composer David Murphy. The subsequent performance was recorded, and compressed to last eight seconds, and this sound punctuates its surroundings at irregular intervals. To mark the opening, there will be a performance of the transcribed score by a group of musicians who are based in Orkney.

Hannah Rickards practice makes use of ‘natural’ sounds to explore notions of perception and interpretation through recorded and manipulated sounds, texts and installations.
