One of the most vicious aspects of the honky-tonk is to be found not in what it is (and to be sure it is in itself disgusting and degrading), but in the really luminous and wonderful folk entertainments it tends somewhat to displace, especially the country house dances, where there were always enough fist fights and associated diversions to satisfy the requirements of normal people.
