private view - a collection of self portraits
The human head is possibly the first thing that we recognise with our eyes. Young children quickly respond to seeing their mothers face and thereafter to those of other individuals. We all learn to interpret what a look on someone's face means: unhappy or contented, uncertain or thoughtful. My face-portrait tells you what I am like. I am true to myself in this drawing and it is an accurate portrayal of me. In this self portrait I appear in stylised form as a woman and artist. My mouth controls the centre; I am wearing a contemplative expression. The attitude of the piece is poetic. Mark making and quality of line are what I am interested in.
Art and the Orkney islands have always played an intrinsic part in my life, where interplay between individuality and a greater sense of importance have underpinned my work.
