private view - a collection of self portraits

next image

The starting point for my self portrait was to use an old etching plate of a Stromness pier. Most of my work on paper tends to be prints, etching and linoprint particularly.

I introduced a hand print and a foot print. As prints they are unique to an individual, although not many people will ever see the sole of your foot. A facial likeness is another matter. It is the traditional idea of a self portrait, but I was unsure if I could draw a recognisable image. Eventually I was more concerned with making the whole image work as a composition of various parts.

My son Martin thinks my tongue should be appearing, as I tend to stick it out when I concentrate and especially while working on a painting or print.
