private view - a collection of self portraits

This was an exercise I was looking forward to but had to keep postponing due to much disruption of moving house and workshop to Ori<ney. I found it a most difficult project ... probably because I felt so unsettled. There was an idea in my head from the start and I wanted to create an illusion of 3D as I am a sculptor. My 3D and 2D work tends to be a building up process and I found myself working on tracing paper, building one image on top of another. This exercise became a series of sketches which looked more and more depressed as their numbers grew and I really started to panic because I could not get the whole piece to 'work. I have to admit I almost gave up. Then, I looked up my old college portfolio and discovered several self portraits. These had so much life to them in comparison and uncannily the new ones (on tracing paper) fitted almost perfectly on top. The piece has become a sort of diary with layers of sketches, prints and other drawn bits all finally glued down after much placing and rearranging.
