private view - a collection of self portraits
The mirror? The mirror provides me with the first movements in the making of this self-portrait work. I look closely into it and take elements from the face which I see reflected there - a bit of ear, now a fragment of nose, mouth, hair, skin, cuts, lines. These are arranged on the picture surface in an order of my own making. As I arrange these pieces, other shapes occur which do not appear on the mirror.
I decide to isolate and organise these pieces of drawing inside a field of a dark green colour (chosen for its empathy with the given colour of the wood I am working on).
Partly because the material I am using allows it, and partly because of the 'pore' in portrait, I drill holes at chosen points on the painted surface. From this point, I decide to push thick paint through from the back of the painting, through to reveal itself on the picture surface, interrupting and activating it. There are no moves left to take on this painting and I finish. The mirror?
