private view - a collection of self portraits
The portrait is painted on canvas stretched on hardboard. The ground is a rough canvas painted a neutral colour. A charcoal drawing was made on the canvas and fixed. The lighting of a self portrait is easier than that of another person because it is easier to experiment by moving lighting sources and mirror. Here I wanted a different quality of light on each side of the head and achieved it by using artificial and natural light. Painting took two attempts of about one hour each.
