private view - a collection of self portraits
I think that my pictures are, or should be, mainly self-explanatory and I leave it to the people who look at them to find in them, or indeed bring to them, what they can - and that not necessarily what I intended. After all, I'm not sure what they are all about myself! And many things happen (happy accidents) or suggest themselves in the making that were not foreseen. Explanation can be a hindrance to vision and I believe that openness to interpretation can enrich. I get a lot of fun and surprise from what others see in them. Over the years I have been mixing media and working a lot on paper as well as canvas: acrylic, oil, pastels, pencils, chalk and glazes; anything that comes to hand if it seems to fit the purpose or solve the problem at any particular stage. Not much rhyme or reason behind it really, except avoid acrylic on top of oil.
For about ten years my ideas have started from images found on the window plane and mingle there with others beyond or thrown from behind; and all changed by the endless shifting of light and weather.
