Patrick Heron 1920 - 1999

Patrick Heron was born in Leeds in 1920 and studied at the Slade School of Art between 1937-39. He met Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo and Barbara Hepworth while working at the Leach Pottery between 1944-45 and wrote extensively on art, publishing many critical writings including 'The Changing Forms of Art' in 1955. Patrick Heron moved to Eagles Nest, Zennor, Cornwall in 1956 where he lived and worked until his death in 1999.

This print was made the year Heron took over Nicholson's studio in St Ives, concurrent with his position as a leading British artist. Heron was instrumental in introducing Taschism to Britain and made regular visits to the Parisian studios of painters such as Sam Francis and Pierre Soulages.

Heron was instrumental in introducing American Abstract Expressionism to Britain and was a friend of the influential critic Clement Greenberg.
