Bet Low 1924 - 2007

Bet Low was born in Gourock in 1924 and studied art at Glasgow School of Art along with Ian Hamilton Finlay during WWII. She attended Jordanhill Teacher Training College and later worked as an Art Therapist. She co-founded, along with John Taylor, the influential New Charing Cross Gallery in Glasgow. "

Low is one of a generation of Scottish artists who took inspiration from northern European Expressionist Art in the aftermath of  WWII.  The influence of Edvard Munch in particular can be seen in her early drawings.

Bet Lows paintings of the 1970s and 80s developed the theme of Scotland's landscape represented in idealised form.  Taking inspiration from the Northern and Western Isles, as well as the Highlands, Lows work of this time presents a romantic idyll of Scotland's wild places.

Low's landscapes of the 1970s and 80s contrast with her earlier work which was influenced by German Expressionism.  Her work following WWII shows a robust handling of subjects with a social basis that has a parallel in the work of fellow Scottish Artist Joan Eardley.
