Keith Vaughan 1912 - 1977

Born in Sussex in 1912 Vaughan gave up a career in advertising to become a painter. Serving in the Pioneer Corps during WWII his drawings of army life drew his first critical attention. Vaughan taught at Camberwell (1946-48), Central School of Art (1948-57) and was visiting lecturer at the Slade from 1959-77. Vaughan travelled widely through the Mediterranean, North Africa and the USA, which formed the basis of his writings and journals. Awarded the CBE in 1969 he died in London in 1977."

During the 1950s Vaughan was strongly influenced by European artists such as Cezanne and Matisse and developed a distinctive style that resolved his interest in figuration and abstraction.
