Marian Ashburn’s work is rooted in close observation and a deep connection to place. Like Sylvia Wishart (1936-2008), she returns repeatedly to the same viewpoints, finding new life in familiar forms through careful looking and persistent drawing.
The exhibition takes its title from the opening line from Allie Windwick’s (1913-1999) song Ower the Ferry, a witty nod to clichés of “Bonny Scotland”, later understood – through a centenary Foy – as a love letter to his in-laws and the wooded and mountainous Perthshire landscape along the River Tay.
Working mostly in sketchbooks and often outdoors, Ashburn captures the landscapes of Orkney – particularly around Stromness – as well as fleeting moments gathered during travel. Her drawings hold a sense of time, movement, and stillness.
Using pen, graphite, and coloured pencil, she brings a considered, expressive line to each work. For Ashburn, the act of drawing is both a pleasure and a commitment – an ongoing practice of attention, patience, and rediscovery.
