The Charles Asprey Gift is the biggest act of philanthropy since Margaret Gardiner’s gift in 1979. Composed of 53 works of British and international art, it reflects a similar energy of collecting to the founding gift.
This body of work by Erin McQuarrie takes its title from Margaret Tait’s (1918-1999) poem The Scale of Things, reflecting a shared attention to the natural world. Rooted in Orkney’s landscape and heritage, it invites close observation and quiet reflection.
The Collection, though small in scale, encompasses paintings and sculptures of exceptional quality by the key artists who were instrumental in importing and extending the ideas of the European avant-garde to Britain.
Contemporary additions provide new insight into the core collection and create an active dialogue between twentieth and twenty-first century works helping the collection as a whole to evolve and develop in enjoyable and stimulating ways.
