Volunteers

The Pier Arts Centre Volunteer Programme is designed to offer a wide range of opportunities that utilise the particular talents and interests of potential volunteers, as well as encouraging the development of new skills and experiences for the individual. Volunteers play an important role in supporting the Centre to maintain its standing as an accredited Museum and Visit Scotland Five Star arts venue.

Volunteering opportunities are based within the Centre’s core activity: Programme, Education and Visitor Services and offer potential to engage with the following:

  • education workshops and outreach events

  • the facilitation of events

  • meeting, greeting and directing visitors to talks and events

  • exhibition installation and de-installation
NB this activity requires some heavy lifting, climbing stairs and ladders as well as longer periods of standing.

  • exhibition invigilation where required

  • maintain and update library and archive catalogue and organise reference library shelving arrangements

  • assisting with exhibition and gallery mail outs

  • general administrative tasks

In the first instance prospective volunteers must register with Voluntary Action Orkney (VAO) who will carry out an initial interview and process any necessary vetting procedures.   Applications are then referred to the Pier Arts Centre Volunteer Co-ordinator who will arrange for an informal interview to take place at the Centre.

Pier Arts Centre volunteers should have good communication skills and have a friendly and helpful disposition. Some knowledge of historical and contemporary art is helpful as are IT skills.

Volunteers are supported by Pier Arts Centre Volunteer Co-ordinator and following a general induction, will receive any specific training as required.

In 2013 The Pier Arts Centre was presented with Voluntary Action Orkney’s Quality Volunteering Award in recognition of its good practice in volunteer management.
